Best Locations for Senior Portraits in Southern New Mexico

Choosing where to take your senior pictures can make just as much of a difference as choosing what to wear. Here in Southern New Mexico, we have everything from the bright white dunes of White Sands to mountain forests, colorful downtown settings and studio portraits—all within a relatively small area.
I photograph seniors who live here in Alamogordo as well as families who travel to Southern New Mexico specifically for their senior portraits. For many of my out-of-town clients, White Sands is the location they have in mind from the beginning. Local seniors sometimes want something completely different, whether that's the mountains, a down
town setting or a studio session.
The best location really depends on the senior and the kind of photographs they want to create. Some want a beautiful landscape and a dressier look, while others want to incorporate sports, a letter jacket, their cap and gown or something else that represents who they are at this point in their life.
In this guide, I'll share some of my favorite locations for senior portraits in Southern New Mexico, including White Sands National Park, Cloudcroft, Mountain Park Events in High Rolls, downtown Alamogordo and my studio in Alamogordo—and what makes each one different.

White Sands National Park Senior Portraits
White Sands National Park is easily one of the most recognizable locations for senior portraits in Southern New Mexico. The white gypsum dunes create a beautiful, simple backdrop that keeps the attention on the senior while still giving the photographs a setting that feels completely different from almost anywhere else.

One of the things I love most about photographing seniors at White Sands is how much variety we can create in one location. A senior can wear a flowing dress for a more dramatic look, change into jeans and boots for something casual or Western, or bring something meaningful such as a letter jacket, sports gear or cap and gown. The location may stay the same, but the photographs can feel completely different.

White Sands is also beautiful as the light changes toward sunset. Earlier in the session, the dunes can look bright and clean, while later light can bring softer colors and more dramatic skies. Some of my favorite senior portraits happen when we simply use what the evening gives us rather than trying to make every session look exactly the same.

For families traveling to Southern New Mexico, White Sands is often the location they already have in mind. For local seniors, it can be easy to forget just how unique this landscape is when it's practically in our backyard. Either way, it offers a setting that allows us to create senior portraits that are both personal to the senior and unmistakably New Mexico.
Cloudcroft Senior Portraits
For seniors who want something completely different from the open landscape of White Sands, Cloudcroft offers a beautiful mountain setting filled with pine trees, changing seasons and a more natural, wooded feel.
I especially like Cloudcroft for seniors who are drawn to the outdoors or want their portraits to have a relaxed, rustic look. Jeans, boots, sweaters and layered outfits can feel right at home in the mountains, but a dressier outfit can look just as beautiful against the trees. The location doesn't have to determine what you wear—it simply gives us a different environment to work with.
The time of year can also make a big difference in how a Cloudcroft senior session looks. The mountains change with the seasons, and cooler temperatures, fall colors or even winter conditions can give us opportunities that we don't have in the desert below.
Weather is something we have to consider when planning a mountain session, especially since conditions in Cloudcroft can be very different from Alamogordo on the same day. I keep an eye on the forecast as the session approaches, but I also know from experience that New Mexico weather doesn't always follow the forecast.
For seniors who love the mountains, trees and a more natural setting, Cloudcroft can be a wonderful choice for senior portraits while still keeping the session close to Alamogordo.
Mountain Park Events Senior Portraits in High Rolls
Mountain Park Events in High Rolls is another favorite location for senior portraits because it gives us so much variety without having to travel between several different places. Unlike a typical mountain location where we may primarily be working with trees and natural scenery, this property gives us several different looks to work with during the same session.
The rustic setting works especially well for seniors who want something with a Western or country feel, but it isn't limited to that style. We can create portraits that feel casual and relaxed, dressier images surrounded by the natural scenery, and photographs that incorporate some of the property's unique features.
One of the things I enjoy about photographing seniors here is being able to move around the property and create photographs that don't all look as though they were taken in the same spot. That variety can also work well when a senior brings more than one outfit and wants each look to have a slightly different feel.
Mountain Park Events is a private property, so sessions there need to be arranged in advance rather than treating it like a public location where we can simply show up. When it's the right fit for a senior, though, it gives us another beautiful option in the Sacramento Mountains that feels very different from both White Sands and Cloudcroft.
Downtown Alamogordo Senior Portraits
Not every senior wants mountains or wide-open scenery. Downtown Alamogordo can be a great choice for seniors who prefer a more urban setting or simply want something different from the natural landscapes Southern New Mexico is known for.
Downtown gives us a mixture of textures, architecture, storefronts and streets that can create a completely different feel from White Sands or the mountains. Even within a relatively small area, we can move between different backgrounds to add variety without spending a lot of the session traveling from one location to another.

This type of setting can work especially well with casual outfits, jackets, jeans or a more polished look. It can also be a good fit for a senior whose personality feels more at home in town than standing in the middle of a field or surrounded by pine trees.

I don't believe every senior session needs to look the same or take place at the location everyone else is choosing. The goal is to find a setting that fits the senior, and for some, downtown Alamogordo is exactly that.
Studio Senior Portraits in Alamogordo
Outdoor locations may get a lot of attention when we talk about senior pictures in Southern New Mexico, but they aren't the only option. I also photograph senior portraits in my Alamogordo studio for seniors who prefer a more polished, controlled setting or simply like the look of studio photography.
A studio session gives us complete control over the lighting and background, without having to worry about wind, temperature or changing weather. We can create a clean, classic portrait or change the lighting and background to give the senior different looks throughout the session.
Studio portraits can also be a great opportunity to focus on the senior without the scenery competing for attention. Clothing, expression and personality become an even bigger part of the finished photograph, and seniors can bring meaningful items or accessories that help make the session their own.
Most importantly, choosing a studio doesn't mean a senior session has to feel formal or traditional. We can create portraits that are relaxed, modern, dramatic or fun depending on the senior's personality and what they want from their photographs.
For some seniors, the perfect backdrop is the white dunes or the mountains. For others, it's right here in the studio. The best senior portrait location is ultimately the one that feels most like you.
Can't Decide Between Studio and Outdoor Senior Portraits?
You don't necessarily have to choose between a studio session and an outdoor location. Some seniors want the clean, polished look we can create in the studio while also wanting the scenery and natural light of an outdoor senior session.
Combining studio and location portraits can give you two very different looks. Your studio portraits might be more polished or dramatic, while your outdoor session could be relaxed, adventurous or centered around a location that means something to you.
It also gives you more opportunities to show different sides of your personality. You might choose a dressier outfit for the studio and something more casual for White Sands, or bring boots and a Western look for a mountain location. There isn't one formula that every senior has to follow.
I offer a Combo Studio and Location Senior Photo Session for seniors who want both experiences. You can find the current details and options on my senior portrait page.
What If You Want More Than One Senior Portrait Location?
Choosing your favorite location doesn't necessarily mean it has to be the only look you create for your senior portraits. Some seniors want the variety of both studio and outdoor photographs, while others want to capture different parts of their senior year across more than one session.
For example, you might love the clean, polished look of studio portraits but also want photographs at White Sands. Or you may want mountain portraits during one season and save another session for sports, cap and gown or something else that represents an important part of your senior year.
I offer senior session options that make it possible to combine studio and location photography or plan multiple sessions across different dates. That gives us more freedom to create a senior portrait experience around you, rather than trying to fit every idea into one location or one afternoon.
How to Choose Between the Best Locations for Senior Portraits
With so many different settings available in Southern New Mexico, choosing a location can feel a little overwhelming. I usually recommend starting with the senior rather than the scenery.
Think about what feels most like you. Do you love being outdoors and want mountains and trees around you? Are you drawn to the bright, open landscape of White Sands? Would an urban setting fit your personality better? Or do you prefer the polished look and controlled environment of a studio?
Your interests can also help guide the decision. Sports, Western style, school accomplishments, hobbies and even the outfits you want to wear can all influence which setting makes the most sense. A location shouldn't overpower who you are—it should help us tell more of your story.
It's also perfectly okay to choose a location simply because you love how it looks. Your senior pictures don't have to follow a theme or represent every activity you've participated in during high school. Sometimes you just want beautiful photographs in a place you've always loved, and that's reason enough.
The locations in this guide are some of the places I photograph seniors most often, but they aren't the only possibilities. I'm also open to other locations throughout Southern New Mexico, including areas around Ruidoso and the Inn of the Mountain Gods. If you have a particular place in mind, we can talk about whether it would be a good fit for your senior session.
If you're not sure which location will work best, that's something we can talk about while planning your session. Part of my job is helping you choose a setting that works with the kind of senior portraits you want to create.
Planning an Outdoor Senior Portrait Session in Southern New Mexico
Once you've chosen a location, there are a few practical things to consider when planning an outdoor senior session. The time of year, temperature, wind and even how quickly the sun sets can all affect the experience and the photographs we create.
Timing is especially important because I plan outdoor sessions around the best light rather than simply choosing any available time of day. The ideal session time changes throughout the year, so a summer senior session may be scheduled very differently from one in late fall or winter.
Weather can also vary quite a bit between locations. It might be warm in Alamogordo while temperatures in Cloudcroft are considerably cooler, and conditions at White Sands can change quickly when the wind picks up. That's one reason I keep an eye on the forecast as an outdoor session approaches.
I don't expect perfect weather for every session. Clouds, wind and changing skies can sometimes give us photographs we never could have planned. But when conditions aren't safe or simply aren't going to give us a good experience, rescheduling may be the better choice.
If you're wondering how I handle wind, rain, heat, clouds and even snow during outdoor sessions, I've put together a separate guide with my outdoor family photography weather tips for Southern New Mexico.
Frequently Asked Questions About Senior Portrait Locations in Southern New Mexico
What is the best location for senior pictures in Southern New Mexico?
There isn't one location that's best for every senior. White Sands is a beautiful choice if you want an open, dramatic landscape, while Cloudcroft and the surrounding mountains offer trees and a more natural setting. Downtown Alamogordo gives us a more urban look, and studio portraits are another option for seniors who prefer a controlled indoor setting. I recommend choosing the location that best fits your personality and the kind of photographs you want.
Can I take my senior pictures at White Sands National Park?
Yes. White Sands is one of my most popular locations for senior portraits, and it's also a favorite for families traveling to Southern New Mexico specifically for their senior pictures. We can create several different looks there by changing outfits and incorporating things that are meaningful to you, such as sports items, a letter jacket, cowboy hat or cap and gown.
Can I combine studio and outdoor senior portraits?
Yes. I offer an option that combines studio and location photography for seniors who want both styles. This can give you the polished look of studio portraits along with photographs at White Sands, in the mountains or at another outdoor location.
Can we choose a senior portrait location that isn't listed here?
Absolutely. The locations in this guide are some of the places where I photograph seniors most often, but they aren't your only choices. I'm open to discussing other locations throughout Southern New Mexico, including the Ruidoso area. If you already have a particular place in mind, let me know and we can talk about whether it will work well for your session.
What happens if the weather is bad for my senior portrait session?
I watch the weather as outdoor sessions approach, but New Mexico weather can change quickly. Clouds or a little wind don't automatically mean we need to reschedule, and sometimes changing conditions create beautiful photographs. If the weather isn't safe or isn't going to give us a good experience, we'll look at our options rather than forcing the session.
